Offseason Havoc

The New York Mets start their offseason Havoc as we head into the winter meetings. Here are the big deals the Mets have made and I will keep updating you.
1. Nick Evans declares for free agency.
2. Jose Reyes agrees to 6 year/ 106 Million dollar contract with the Miami Marlins
3. Mets trade OF Angel Pagan to the San Francisco Giants for OF Andres Torres and P Ramon Ramirez
4. Sign P Jon Rauch to a 1- year, 3.5 Million dollar contract.
5. Sign P Frank Ramirez to a 2 year, 12 Million dollar contract.

The Great Plague of Injuries Strikes Again

Some would say that the Mets are leading the league in MRIs. They say that because once again the Mets have been struck with what is known as "The Great Plague of Injuries" And its all thanks to Chris Young, Johan Santana, Jose Reyes, Daniel Murphy, and Ike Davis. 3 of the 5 guys in that list are likely or certainly done for the year (Davis, Young,Murphy) Ike got hurt in Mid-May when he sprained his ankle and got a bone bruise in his left leg. Young tore his shoulder apart again, and Murphy, the latest to be struck by injury, got spiked by Jose Contanza and tore his MCL. Reyes could be back by late-August with a Hamstring pull, and Santana could be back early September after he had season ending surgery last year. Because of all these Injuries, the Mets Season is probably in the crapper, I think our goal for the rest of this year is for us to finish .500 or above and finish in 3rd place in the NL east.

Trade Grades

The Mets were fairly quiet over the trade deadline, as they only made two trades overall. Im here to tell you if the Mets aced or Failed these trades.
Trade #1: #75 RP Francisco Rodriguez to Brewers for 2 players to be named later.
Grades: Mets: B-*
Brewers: B
The reason i gave the Mets a B- was because they in fact DID get rid of the attitude and contract of Frankie Rodriguez, considering if he finished 20 more games h would have gotten a 17.5 Million dollar bonus, but i gave them the minus because i thought they could have gotten more then probably 2 non-high-end prospects for Frankie. I give the Brewers and B because This helps them in the NL Central race and to sure up there wobbly 'pen.
Trade #2: #15 OF Carlos Beltran to Giants for SP Zack Wheeler
Grades: Mets A+
Giants: C
The reason i gave the Mets an A+ was because they really did ace this trade. They got Zack Wheeler, the #33 prospect in the nation and the #10 Starting Pitcher Prospect, Even though they did give up one of there best sluggers in Carlos Beltran, Carlos is 33 and exiting his prime. So the reason i give the Giants an C is because Carlos will reall only be a 1 or 2 year rental, but for the Mets they get an top-40 prospect who is 21 and will help the Mets in the long-term future.

Going, Going, Gone?

Over this whole rollercoaster year for the Mets on the field, there has been a lot of speculation of selling off the field. At the start of the year, Jose Reyes was the topic of these trade rumors so to speak. Next, came the nasty Fred Wilpon Comments on Jose Reyes and David Wright. Then, some people thought that we might trade the long-time face-of-the-franchise David Wright in order to keep Jose. When that died down, We traded Francisco Rodriguez to the Brewers for two minor league prospects over the All-star break. Then, the latest edition of this saga is that we have put up white flags because of that K-rod trade, SO that meant that th next person probably to go is Carlos Beltran, reports say that the Red Sox, Pirates, and Giants are interested if we put him on the market. Back to Jose: We have started secret negotiations with Jose in order to get a deal done that will let him stay in New york.

What If...?

Life is full of "What Ifs?". Sometime we ask ourselves "what if" this and "what if" that when in reality, it does not do a thing to think about those things. But in the next few segments of this post I'm gonna reflect on the "what ifs" of the Mets season so far through 90 games.
What If David Wright hadn't dove to make that tag on Carlos Lee on April 19, we could have lost that game, but we would not have lost the face of the franchise for 40+ games. What If Ike Davis hadn't gone in to catch that pop-up and let David catch it and did not sprain his ankle. What If Jose Reyes didn't run so hard down the 1st base line (though i can't blame him) and strained his hamstring, he would have 123 hits on the year, but we would have won more games. If you put all of these What Ifs together, it all comes out to one conclusion, a contending baseball team. The Mets have 5 key players out right now (David Wright, Ike Davis, Jose Reyes, Johan Santana, Chris Young) and if we had all these player, we could be contending in our division. But Terry Collins has pulled all of his young guns out of his pocket and has pushed our team over .500.

No Reyes? No Problem.

Since Jose Reyes strained his hamstring on Saturday afternoon, The Mets have been playing all there cards right, as they have been 4-0 without him in the lineup. Update: the New York Post states that the Mets will hold secret negotiations with Jose Reyes to get a deal done and for him to get a new contract. Jose Is likely to go on the DL. If there was a worse time for him to go on the DL, i wanna know about it because the Mets face a stretch of 7 All-Star Pitchers in a row starting Thursday at Los Angeles. The pitchers are 7/7: Clayton Kershaw 7/8: Ryan Vogelsong 7/9: Tim Lincecum 7/10: Matt Cain then the Big 3 in Citi Field.

Jose Report 7-6-11

MVP?: What is Greatness in Sports? Is it hitting 50 Home Runs in a year, Scoring 25,000 points in your career, or shattering tons of records? In my Opinion, Greatness is helping your team win games every time out. Thats what Jose Reyes has done all year for the Mets. Reyes has racked up ridiculous numbers as he leads the N.L in Batting Average (.354), Hits (124), Triples (15) and is second in Stolen Bases (30). The question is though, could Reyes beat out big bat guys like Prince Fielder and Joey Votto, or Triple Crown Threat guys like Matt Kemp for the N.L MVP award?

Hammy Whammy: Jose Reyes was looking invincible before Saturday's game Vs the Yankees, but then in the 1st Inning, he showed signs that he was just human, as he suffered a grade 1 Hamstring strain in the 1st inning. The Mets do not want to push Reyes to get back into the Lineup, Terry said earlier this week that it was stupid to have Reyes for one day or night then lose him for 3 weeks.

Comeback Kid: Going into the last day of All-Star voting, Jose Reyes was down by more then 221,000 votes going into the day, right behind Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzski. The Final vote count was that Reyes won by 800,000. This means that Reyes would have to AT LEAST gotten 1 million votes in the FINAL day of Voting to beat out Tulo for the Starting Shortstop position.

Reyes= Greatest?: Alex Rodriguez, usually not very sympathetic to players on his crosstown Rival, said on Friday night, right before the first game of the Subway Series, that Jose Reyes is the greatest player in baseball right now. Thats Right. A-Rod said this. He said he was better than himself, Derek Jeter, Mark Teixera, Curtis Granderson, Matt Kemp, Adrian Gonzalez, Albert Pujols, Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay. etc. Was A-Rod trying to play mind games with Reyes, or really being serious. Mid-Season Awards

Here are the Mid- season awards on the Mets so far this year.
MVP: Jose Reyes. The clear cut choice for this award as Reyes has been tearing it up all year and has been electrifying to the team.
Silver Slugger: Carlos Beltran. Beltran leads the team in Home Runs and RBI's so far this year even after having microfracture surgery last year.
Cy Young: Dillion Gee. Dillion leads the team in Wins and ERA as he started out the year 7-0.
Rookie Of the Year: Justin Turner. JT won Rookie of the Month in May and has shown us that he wants that 2nd basemen's job.

Hot Hitters, Injury Report, Wildcard Bound?, Hot N' Cold, and Halfway There: Reviewing the 1st half of the 2011 Mets Season

Hot Hitters: It starts with a spark. That's what can get a team going and get them to be a contender. Jose Reyes has been that spark all year for the New York Mets. Reyes leads the NL in Batting Average (.334), Runs (58), Hits (109), and Triples (13). Reyes is also 2nd in stolen Bases (27) Reyes, who just turned 28 on June 11, is just entering his prime and has been the topic of trade rumors throughout the year. Another hot hitter for the Mets has been Justin Turner. Justin, since he entered the Bigs 6 weeks ago, has been tearing it up. JT (Justin Turner) has gotten 2 Homers and 32 RBI in his 48 games played this year, also with a .267 average. JT also helped the Mets win their first walk-off win of the year last week by getting a bases-loaded- walk-off-hit-by-pitch to help us win 3-2 in 13 innings vs the Oakland A's. One last guy who is having a resurgent season is Carlos Beltran. Beltran missed the 2nd half of last year after having microfracture surgery on his knee. No one, evan the most optimistic Mets fan, could have predictedthat he be playing every day and be moving on his knee so well. Beltran leads the Mets in Homers this year with 10.
Injury Report: The Mets have lost two big bats since mid-May. David Wright and Ike Davis. David was cleared to resume baseball activities and has started taking grounders and twisting his body. Ike, on the other hand, his season does not look so good. Ike might need to have season ending surgery if he can't run in 16 days. Davis has been wearing a boot to protect his bone bruise. Johan Santana has been out since last year after having surgery on his throwing shoulder, but has started to throw off a mound. Chris Capuano, who tweaked his side earlier this week, says he will be ready for his next start on Wednesday vs the Tigers.
Wildcard Bound?: The Mets have been doubted ever since they have hired Terry Collins. SI before the season predicted us to finish last in the division. Yet, the Mets have proved all the haters wrong, as they are in contention for the wildcard spot in the N.L. The Mets are 7th in the wildcard race, trailing the Braves, D-Backs, Cardinals, Nationals, Pirates, and Reds. The Braves are the early favorites for the Wildcard spot, as noone expected the D-Backs, Nats, or Pirates to be evan close to this. The Cardinals recently lost their best slugger, Albert Pujols, for 6 weeks so that should dim their chances. The Reds are really the shaky team in this race. They have been REALLY shaky.
Hot N' Cold: The Mets have probably been one of the most streakiest team this year. They started off the year 5-13. But then came bck and went 17 -9 in their next 26 games. to be 22-22. then they went 6-9 in the next 15 games to be 28-31. Then turned it around and have been 11-8 in the last 19 games. The Mets are currently 39-39 and dn't know where their next streak will take them.
Halfway There: The Mets will be halfway through the year once they finish the series vs the Tigers.
